France lags behind in first aid training
Today, it is not natural for us to imagine that one day we might witness severe choking. Our first instinct is usually to call for help. However, as bystanders, we are the best chance for a victim to survive. Indeed, in an accident, it is the first few minutes that count. First aid is, as La Croix-Rouge says, "a vital initial step in ensuring effective and rapid intervention to limit serious injury and improve the chances of survival". We cannot rely on emergency services as they arrive on average within 13 minutes. However, only 40% of the population has been trained or initiated in first aid compared to 95% in Norway. It is therefore not surprising to see that only "38% of French people know that a child who has swallowed washing-up liquid should rinse his mouth and then call for help. Above all, you must not make them vomit. "As Benjamin Bitane of La Croix-Rouge.
Accidents in everyday life, 3rd cause of death in France
Accidents in everyday life are the 3rd leading cause of death in France with more than 20,000 deaths per year. They represent an unintentional trauma including: holiday and leisure accidents, accidents occurring outside, sports accidents and domestic accidents. The latter are responsible for 1 in 2 accidents, with children aged 1 to 4 paying a heavy price. Indeed, the home is an environment that is not adapted to a child and so we find many dangers (intoxication, falls, burns, etc.). However, during my numerous field surveys, I was able to observe that parents are not very aware of first aid for children and still underestimate many risks. Thus, in the event of a domestic accident, parents find themselves totally helpless, especially when it is their own child. However, there are first aid training courses, but they are long, costly, not compulsory and require regular training.
Memorandum on first aid in domestic accidents
In order to better understand my subject, I asked myself "What is France’s control of the rescue chain during domestic accidents ? "
"When my son got burnt, I was panic-stricken and totally helpless"
Rachel Robin mother of 3 children
How to apply first aid in order to reduce the number and severity of domestic accidents in children aged 1 to 3 ?
To respond to this problem, it is necessary to train and maintain training to be able to react in an emergency and therefore to apply the gestures. I decided to focus on parents. They need to be motivated to learn and practice life-saving techniques. But they also need to learn not to panic in an emergency, to act instinctively and quickly. They must gain confidence in themselves and their actions.
Design thinking method
In order to design a viable project, I did many workshops with users but also with professionals. I chose to train parents through a digital solution because of its practicality.
Self-training and emergency assistance application
Through MANI, the user is trained in first aid for children, practicing regularly and in a fun way through role-playing. In addition, they learn how to control stress to avoid panic in an emergency. In a dangerous situation, the application becomes an aid: it calls for help while giving the witness the gestures to be applied until until he is in contact with the first aiders.
Registration
Through registration, we will customize our training program such as frequency and music. We also integrate and set up voice assistance to interact more quickly and easily with the application.
A personalised programme through repetition and self-evaluation
After registering, the application suggests training sessions according to our progress and frequency. This program allows us to review the movements continuously and not to forget them. We therefore find the theory of the gestures and situation scenarios to train in a regular and realistic way. The program also offers anti-stress exercises to avoid panic in emergency situations.
Learn a first aid procedure
During the training of the gesture, one will learn to spot the signs of an accident, then learn step by step the technique of the movements thanks to illustrations, voice synthesis, but also by simulating the gestures on a plush. Psychological advice is also given to avoid intense stress and trauma for the child.
Training on scenarios situation
To practice gestures, the user will listen to a soundtrack during which a child will have an accident. After recognizing the signs of the accident, the user will practice the gestures on a plush toy or doll. Finally, the user assesses himself to gain self-confidence but also to progress in the learning process.
Learning to control stress
To learn how to control our stress, the user finds different exercises like learning to breathe.
Progress and motivation
In order to make further progress, the user can train on a specific gesture, thanks to the "all training" section. In addition, in the "profile" section, they can find their statistics and the badges they have earned as they train. Finally, the application frequently suggests training with a first aid association to complete the learning process.
Assisting in an emergency situation
Today, when we call the emergency services, we receive an answer in less than a minute. However, it is imperative that during this time, the witness acts to avoid a fatal accident. Thanks to MANI, the user will be able to launch the application thanks to its voice assistance. Thereafter, the app will call for help while giving the gestures to be applied until a professional is received.
